Federal boat inspection discovers 100 starfish, poachers detained

Cancun, Q.R. — Several fisherman have been arrested in the Cancun Hotel Zone after an inspection found their watercraft loaded with starfish.

Federal authorities have been monitoring coastal regions since the ban on conch snails and starfish went into effect earlier this year. It was through this surveillance that they noticed a small fishing boat in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Authorities kept watch on the fishermen as they returned to shore. Once on land, the fishermen were stopped and their catch inspected. Rodolfo Garcia, director of the Federal District, said that the men were found carrying 100 starfish and a kilo of pink snails, a species that is now considered endangered.

Through concentrated efforts between the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection and the Federal Tourist Police, the men were detained and the marine life returned to the sea.
