Family in need gifted sargassum house in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Another home made of the region’s unwanted seaweed has been gifted to a local family. On Friday, Puerto Morelos mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz was on site for the passing of the key to its new owner.

The modest home was donated to a family in need by businessman Omar Vázquez Sánchez. The Puerto Morelos businessman has been constructing and donating homes made of sargassum blocks for several years.

His latest home was gifted to a family from Colonia La Fe, Mrs. Elizabeth Bonola López and her two daughters, after the mother suffered an accident that left her unable to fully work. Their previous home, a wooden palapa, was also heavily damaged by the passing of hurricanes last year.

“I know Omar Vázquez and I know that he is a person who contributes a lot to the society of our municipality,” said Puerto Morelos mayor Bianca Muñoz.

During the passing of the key, Omar Vázquez said that this is house number 13 that has been built for the benefit of families in Puerto Morelos. He said the latest home has been named Angelita in memory of his late mother.

“We are very happy to continue supporting the community, to see this family with their dream come true,” he said.

Vázquez explained that the home donated to the Colonia La Fe family consists of 60 square meters of construction. It was made using 3,250 sargablocks (bricks made from sargassum) that when wet, he said, weighed 25 tons.

He added that the goal for 2022 is to build 37 more houses.
