Falling snow shocks residents of Chihuahua

State of Chihuahua, Mexico — The ninth winter storm of the season left a majority of residents in the state of Chihuahua shocked when sleet and snow began to fall.

The snowfall was associated with Cold Front No. 39 that hit the region Tuesday. Depending on the municipality, residents experineced a mix of heavy snowfall to sleet and even heavy rain.

Efrén Matamoros, Director de Protección Civil reported that 18 of the state’s 67 municipalities woke up to below zero temperatures. Civil Protection reported that in Madera, residents woke up to -2C Tuesday, while those living in Ciudad Juarez woke up to more heavy rain.

“The temperatures are forecast for about 9 degrees Celsius with the minimum only 1 or 2 C due to frontal system number 39,” said the Director of Civil Protection.

On Tuesday, the National Guard closed the Janos, Chihuahua-Agua Prieta, Sonora section of roadway in the mountainous area known as Puerto San Luis due to an intense snowfall.

Civil Protection warns that the very cold temperatures will continue.
