Cancun, Riviera Maya — President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that the Maya Train project will be extended to include additional stops and will be financed with public and private resources.
He explained that besides traveling the Cancun-Palenque route, destinations in Campeche and Yucatan will be added, going from a 900-kilometer track to a 1,500-kilometer track and will cost approximately 120 to 150 billion peso.
López Obrador said that the train will now travel through Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo and Yucatan, noting that it will be financed with the nearly 7 billion peso collected annually from tourism tax. To this will be added private resources.
“As it will not be enough, a call will be made to seek a partnership with the private initiative so that it will be a mixed investment of public investment and private investment.
“We will be in a position to launch the call, start the tender process from December 1 and to have the project completed no later than four years.”
He says that over the next three months, the project will be prepared and ready for a December 1 unveiling. López Obrador said that this project “will greatly promote tourism and will, of course, create jobs in the southeast, which is the most abandoned region in the country.”
López Obrador reiterated his promise that the government will be austere to help finance its projects such as the Maya Train or the renovation of refineries and the investment for oil production.
“We are going to save and I hope that the other powers do the same. I am receiving support for a state austerity plan that includes the three levels which includes autonomous entities. That we all help to save and free up funds for development. That’s the purpose.
“Austerity is not an administrative matter, it is a scare of principles, there cannot be a rich government with poor people.
“That is what we are going to apply.”
The announcement of the extension of the Maya Train project comes after officials said that proposals for the upcoming project would be considered, but the project route itself will not be modified.
