CANCUN, Q. Roo. – A massive expansion to Cancun’s arts center is more than half complete and is expected to be functional in two months.
The extension on the House of Culture (Casa de la Cultura) will have adequate space for strings, piano cubicles, theater halls as well as a multipurpose room on the top deck.
The bottom deck will be a special area for presentation of the Symphony Orchestra, theater, dance and exhibitions. The extension also offers additional theater spaces with ample wardrobe and prop areas, as well as areas for students to practice.
Lilian Villanueva Chan, Secretary of Culture of theMinistry of Education and Culture (SEyC) explains, “The center is being expanded to meet the demands of students enrolled in different fields of culture, as well as being the new home theater school which will begin next August.”
The construction is carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure of the State, who announced the development would be delayed two months due to previous weather conditions.
For the time being, musicians of the Symphony Orchestra will continue to rehearse in the Cancun La Salle Institute until the expansion of the cultural center is completed.
“This work represents an expansion that will serve mainly in-house, but it will also benefit those who require space for presentation or practice,” said Juana Guadalupe Santín Velazquez, director of the Casa de la Cultura de Benito Juarez.
In August, the theater should be ready to take on teachers and performing arts graduates who have been training during the past year. Students study for three years to receive an Associate Technical Professional Theatre degree.
Classes and workshops currently offered in the House of Culture include music, theater, modern folk dance, jazz, ballet and fine arts, to name a few. Students of all ages are accepted.
