Excessive speed sends combi driver up Playa del Carmen pole

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An accident involving a public transportation van and a metal highway sign left two with injuries. Police arrived at the 5:00 a.m. crash site Wednesday morning to find the driver and one female passenger inside the combi. Both had been tossed about and were transferred to hospital for medical attention.

Preliminary reports say the driver of the public Lázaro Cárdenas del Río van was descending from the 14th Street overpass at excessive speed when he lost control and crashed into the central median of Playa del Carmen Boulevard.

Due to the speed, the unit went up over the metal guard rail where it became hung-up. Police arrived to find the combi resting part-way up a now-leaning highway sign, where it remained until they had it towed. An estimate of the damage to city property was not provided.
