Evacuations have begun ahead of Delta, everything to shut by 5:00 p.m. including Cancun International Airport

Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Governor Carlos Joaquín has ordered the suspension of all activities before the imminent arrival of hurricane Delta starting at 1:00 p.m. He stressed that this includes the municipalities of Tulum, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Puerto Morelos, Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres and Lázaro Cárdenas.

In the case of essential activities such as supermarkets, these must close their doors no later than 5:00 p.m. “I emphasize that everyone should stay home from 5:00 p.m., since from this time, there could be gusts of wind,” he explained adding that a dry law will also be in effect.

The president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos & Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, Roberto Cintrón, announced that according to the information they have been provided so far, the Cancun Hotel Zone will have to be evacuated as soon as possible. Everyone in the hotel zone is expected to be relocated by Tuesday afternoon.

“It was requested that the hotels earmarked for category 4 are made use of to create less chaos in the mobility of tourists here in Cancun (…) the evacuation of the hotel zone is a fact,” he pointed out. He is recommending people vacate as soon as possible since the effects of Delta are expected to begin around 5:00 or 6:00 p.m.

Carlos Joaquín affirmed that the Cancun and Cozumel airports continue to operate regularly until 5:00 p.m., at which time, the airport will close. He also said that evacuations for Holbox Island, Punta Allen, Punta Herrero and Banco Chinchorro have began.
