Environmental investigation conducted into American boat grounded on reef system

Mahahual, Q.R. — An environmental investigation is being conducted after an American sailboat ran ground on a coral reef outside Mahahual.

On September 22, two Americans were rescued by the Mexican Navy from their stranded sailboat after it ran ground on the Banco Chinchorro coral reef. The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) says the couple’s boat damaged a large area of reef.

Profepa inspectors report finding damage in a strip of reef more than 100 meters long and three meters wide, which was allegedly caused by the American boat, Amazing Grace.

Through a statement, Profepa said that they will continue with the administrative proceedings to account for damages and likely fine the couple.

Officials from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency explained that the Banco Chinchorro coral reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef, one of the largest structures of its kind in the Caribbean basin and the largest in Mexico and is part of a federal natural protected area.
