Holbox, Q.R. — The entire island of Holbox is closed for the day due to environmental issues. The island is without proper electricity, water and zero proper drainage for which they need time to repair.
Islanders closed the ferry crossing to visitors Sunday July 30 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in order to have time to receive ferry shipments of large water pipes and deal with the issues at hand. Through council meetings, many of the islanders say Holbox is on the verge of an ecological collapse due to these problems.
The Holbox Hotel Association made the announcement on social media saying that due to lack of water, zero operating drainage and serious water supply failures, it was prudent to close access to the destination.
Community of Holbox and Visitors:
Due to the lack of water, no drainage operation, serious failures in the supply of electricity and lack of commitment on the part of the municipal and state authorities, it is necessary to prevent access to the island of Holbox which is already in a state of emergency.
We lament the inconvenience that this causes; because to this day there is no guarantee of the basic services for you that visit the island and for those who inhabit it.
We invite you to take the necessary precautions this Sunday, July 30, 2017, since there will be a TEMPORARY CLOSURE to enter the Island of Holbox from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
