Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Local residents are responding to community recycling which has seen a increase over last year’s numbers.
Alina Aké Liane Canto, director of Environment of the municipality of Solidaridad, says the number of those recycling are slowly increasing but feels that progress is slow. She says when compared to the population density of the region to the number of those participating in the recycle programs, it’s low.
In the month of July, they collected more than four tons of appliances including microwave ovens, fans, blenders and televisions, a figure that is matched with 2014. However so far this year, the recycling programs have received 23 tons of electronic equipment, which is a lot more when you consider that in all of 2014, the program received 32 tons mostly of printers, computers, phones, chargers and DVDs.
In the region, there are 11 active recycling points (reciclatón points), nine of which are located in and around Playa del Carmen and two of which are located in Puerto Aventuras.
