El Crustáceo Kascarudo of Holbox destroyed in fire

Holbox, Q.R. — A fire at El Crustáceo Kascarudo on the island of Holbox over the weekend left the restaurant in ruins. A fire that began in the restaurant’s rooftop palapa ended up consuming the building despite efforts to dose flames with buckets of water and extinguishers.

Best efforts were made by locals who tried to control the flames, but the dry grass was no match for them. The Saturday afternoon blaze ended after fire ate through the entire restaurant. Restaurant owner Jimmy Marin reported that two palapas measuring 12 meters by 3 meters along with chairs, tables and other property, were consumed, affecting more than 20 people who work in his restaurant.

Firemen were able to fully extinguish flames, preventing the spread to other nearby buildings. Unofficially, it has been reported that a large truck passed by the area, pulling down CFE power lines, which in turn, made contact with the palapa and generated the fire. An investigation into the exact cause of the blaze is underway.
