Cancun, Q.R. – Several water purification plants throughout the state have been suspended for irregularities.
Alejandro Pino Murillo, head of the Federal Commission against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) for Quintana Roo, says that a total of eight water plants and dispensers have been suspended due to poor product quality.
Cofepris says they randomly review approximately 30 of these facilities each month throughout the state. Facility cleanliness and water quality are monitored with water samples that are taken to a laboratory and tested for optimal quality.
Pino Murillo explained that common irregularities include water with a detectable level of chlorine, which should not be present. He says that in other cases, some water purification companies exceed the allowed limit of their daily production which lowered the water quality until the water was no longer optimal for human consumption.
In order for the suspensions to be lifted, company owners are also expected to provide full maintenance of their facilities to ensure equipment is in optimal condition.
