Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Operations by the Public Safety Directorate of Solidarity have found drunk driving to be the leading cause of auto accidents in the state so far this year.
Head of Public Safety, Juan Martin Rodríguez Olvera, said that more than 200 motorists were removed from behind the wheel since March of this year. He says that 22 random road stops were placed around the state since March where officials found 216 drivers to be over the allowed alcohol limit.
Rodríguez Olvera says intoxicated drivers remain one of the leading causes of death in the state. He explained that when a vehicle is pulled over and the driver found intoxicated, another person in the vehicle is allowed to drive. However, when the vehicle is without a second capable driver, the vehicle is impounded. Regardless, the intoxicated driver is fined and sent to jail for a minimum of 20 hours.
