Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An accident caused by a drunk driver left the entire city of Playa del Carmen without drinking water over the weekend when a vehicle collided into a power pole.
A call was dispatched to Emergency 066 after an SUV struck a power pole in the city’s west side. The impact of the vehicle was strong enough to knock over the large power pole that supplied electricity to the city’s water pumps.
The speeding vehicle was driven by impaired man who lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the pole, breaking it at the base. The subject was not injured and fled the scene on foot.
More than 250,000 people and 40 hotels were left without water for over eight hours as CFE crews worked frantically to restore electricity. Aguakan technical manager, David Chel, explained that the truck hit “The power line that supplies the area of collection wells and is the area that provides water for all Playa del Carmen.”
Due to the extent of the damage, Chel said they had to change the pole so they could restore electricity and get the pumps working again that supply water to more than 15 kilometers of lines.
