Cancun, Q.R. – A report from the Ministry of Tourism shows that between November of 2015 and January 2016, national and international airlines offer a combined 2.1 million seats to Cancun.
Tourism from the United States and Canada generate the largest market, however, Brazil and Colombia from the south as well as Europeans including the UK, France, Spain and Germany also count for a large percentage of international visitors. Russian travel has also seen a sharp increase to Cancun.
Laura Fernandez Pina, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (Sedetur) explains, “Most domestic and foreign tourism we receive arrive by air. We have the best connected country to the world with direct flights to major cities in America and Europe.”
During the winter is when domestic and foreign airlines resume their flights, significantly increasing the number of visitors to the region.
“There is no official date for the start of the winter season, however in the past two years, the first two weeks of January have shown to be exceptional, which previously represented a low,” noted Abelardo Vara Rivera, hotelier and member of Advisory Council of the Association of Hotels in Cancun and Puerto Morelos (AHC).
In recent years, the winter tourist seasons have been excellent with up to 10,000 national and international visitors per day making their way around destinations such as Cancun, Isla Mujeres and into the Riviera Maya, he added.
