Holbox, Q.R. — More than 50 new projects await approval for the island of Holbox in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, however, the municipal president says the island is not ready.
Municipal Lázaro Cadenas president, Emilio Jiménez Ancona, says that about 50 project are currently frozen as they wait for construction permits for various developments on the island. He says that only those that meet the requirements will be authorized, although the authorization also depends on the needs of complying with basic services.
So far, he says they have not granted any land use changes or construction licenses as there is a state agreement, after the collapse of the island in mid-year, which was to not approve more developments.
However, he explains that developers are insistent on building, adding two more projects to the list of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for Holbox, One of the projects is Villas Holx that would be an investment of 16.6 million peso for a total of 20 apartments.
The second project is a hotel called Holox Escap for the construction of nine rooms in a development with an investment of 5 million peso.
The island of Holbox is still fragile, with the sanitary sewer system collapsing again.
Jiménez Ancona says that more projects would simply put the system at risk since the current system is still not running at 100 percent.
He explained that once it’s complete, “There will be 200 drainage connectors with a capacity of up to 15,000 people. It is currently only 60 percent complete. They expect it to be ready in 2018.”
