Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Several hundred people took to blocking the Federal Highway on Tuesday in protest of Aguakan.
On Sunday, a power failure at the pumps resulted in a lack of water being supplied to homes in the town of Puerto Aventuras. Thousands of people were left without water for nearly three days.
Local townspeople took their complaints to the municipal administration, however, after a day without resolution, they continued their protest of the privately sourced water company by blocking the Federal Highway, which is the only road access along the Riviera Maya.
Operation staff from Aguakan arrived at around 5:00 p.m. in an attempt to resolve the water issue, but were met by several hundred discontent residents who demanded water as well as the removal of the Aguakan company as sole water supplier.
Police were brought on scene to help control the angry crowd. Water restoration was in place by 8:30 p.m. but not before more than 20 kilometers of traffic was back up due to the highway blockage.
Protests against this latest problem with Aguakan were also demonstrated in Solidarity as issues with the company continue.
