Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Permits for the demolition of the Blue Parrot restaurant bar have been issued by city officials nearly a year after five people lost their lives during a popular music festival.
According to the Directorate of Urban Development, demolition permits have been issued for the Blue Parrot as well as Coco Maya Cave. The permits were requested by a single individual for the construction of a new hotel in the area.
Currently, the property that occupies the Blue Parrot has been abandoned and since February, has no longer been guarded by security elements. Several establishments in that vicinity closed over the past year when licenses expired, in anticipation of the new hotel construction.
These properties are separated by a public beach access that begins on 12th Street. It has been noted that this beach access will not be modified.
The Blue Parrot was closed this past January 16 after a shooting inside the establishment saw 13 injured and five dead.
