Cancun, Q.R. – Debit cards continue to be the main target for thieves in the state of Quintana Roo, says the National Commission.
The National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Users (Condusef) reports that in the state, debit cards are the main target for identity theft. They say that last year, 43 cases of identity theft were reported for Quintana Roo with damages ranging from 2,000 peso to 500,000 peso.
These figures are up from 20 reported cases in 2015.
Condusef says that the most violated debit cards are those from BBVA Bancomer, Banamex and Inbursa, and that thieves more times than not, use the card information to withdraw remaining cash.
In 2016, only four cases of credit card theft was reported for Quintana Roo. To date, there is no federal law to regulate or punish cyber fraud.
