Deadly tourist bus accident leaves at least 11 dead

Mahahual, Q.R. — A tourist bus with a capacity for 40 people overturned on the Cafetal-Mahahual highway, killing at least 11 people dead and leaving 20 injured.

Information came from the Ministry of Public Security who reported that the 31 passengers, who were traveling aboard a Tourism Costa Maya bus, were cruise ship visitors from Mahahual who arrived on the Royal Caribbean and were heading to the archaeological site of Chaccobén.

The spokesman for Civil Protection of Quintana Roo, Vicente Martin, said that at least seven Americans and two Swedes suffered injuries. Authorities have yet to disclose the nationalities of the deceased, noting only that most of the tourist on board were from the United States, Brazil and Sweden.

Ten people died at the scene. One of the deceased was a male minor, while another was the Mexican tourist guide on board the bus. One tourist died in hospital from their injuries.

“The forensic medical service is removing the bodies and conducting the corresponding legal procedures,” Jorge Santana, general director of Transit of Quintana Roo said in a statement.

It has been unofficially reported that the large tourist bus suffered a tire explosion on the right front, which caused the bus to tip over and land on its side.

Paramedics and elements of the Ministry of Public Security of Quintana Roo, as well as security corporations provided assistance to the injured. Several of the accident victims were transferred to the capital city of Chetumal for medical treatment, while others were sent to Tulum.
