Damage to Playa del Carmen trees sees cable company line project halted

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A civil association in Playa del Carmen reported the company IZZI to city council for damages to trees and natural spaces.

The report was made by Jaal Kaak Naab civil association in Playa del Carmen who says the company damaged natural areas and trees while installing lines over a two-kilometer area. City inspectors arrived to where IZZI was installing their equipment and, before leaving the sites, did close them.

The cable television service company was installing new lines in the residential area of Catalonia when the project was temporarily halted.

According to the complaint, “The work passes over green areas and company personnel felled some trees and cut the roots of others, which may cause a great problem to vegetation,” said Liane Aké, president of the organization.

The General Directorate of Infrastructure, Urban Development, Environment and Climate Change closed the installation work that was being done in the area of Catalonia 1 subdivision with two closure seals.

The complaint comes weeks after more than 500 healthy trees were illegally and mysteriously felled along the highway between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.
