Current mayor working on ratifying parking meters for Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Current mayor of Playa del Carmen, Cristina Torres Gómez sent the request to the state for ratification of a concession of up to 15 years for a Comprehensive Mobility System in Playa del Carmen, which includes the installation of parking meters.

In November 2017, the Cabildo de Solidaridad, chaired by Cristina Torres Gómez, authorized the delivery of the concession to the company Promotora de Reordenamiento Urbano SA de CV for a period of 15 years.

“Because the term of the concession exceeds the management of the municipal government of Solidaridad 2016-2018, for the sake of the social public good and with the purpose that the determination issued by the municipality takes effect, it is pertinent that is be ratified by the Honorable XV State Legislature,” says the document.

“The concessionaire must initiate the operation of the Parking System and the Shared Bicycle System within 180 days after ratification by the Legislature, which period may be extended for an equal period,” the document said, adding that it was awarded to the private company in April of this year.

Mayor-elect, Laura Beristain Navarrete calls the parking meters a “aguakanazo” saying that “It is unfortunate that the municipal government has taken the decision to fill the city with parking meters. Worse yet, the ratification of this concession is being processed almost 30 days after the end of the administration, generating a problem for the municipal administration that will take office on September 30.”

Cristina Torres Gómez says if approved, the cost of parking with the meter system will be 6 pesos per hour and will be limited to certain points of the city. However, the approval of state congress is still required to install the parking meters under the Integral Mobility Law.
