Cruises to Cozumel canceled due to Galveston port closure

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cruise ships departing Port Galveston in Texas have been canceled due to tropical storm Harvey.

The normal flow of cruise ships between Galveston Harbor and other Caribbean destinations, including Cozumel, has been interrupted. So far, four cruise ships have been affected by Harvey, remaining unable to call on the Port of Galveston.

Nearly 20,000 passengers on three Carnival cruises and one Royal Caribbean ship were scheduled to disembark at Galveston over the weekend, however, due to the extreme weather, Harvey forced port closure by the Coast Guard. Ships are still unable to dock at Galveston leaving the nearly 20,000 passengers afloat for several more days.

Royal Caribbean said it decided to divert the Liberty of the Seas to Miami “until conditions near the Port of Galveston permit safe travel.” It was originally scheduled to arrive in Galveston on Sunday.

Galveston is also the main departure point for cruise ships headed for Cozumel. So far, the arrival of two ships has been canceled, Carnival Valor, which was scheduled to dock Monday and the Liberty of the Seas that was scheduled to dock yesterday Tuesday.

Three other cruise ships were scheduled to dock in Cozumel in the coming days, however, the Galveston port remains closed due to flooding.

Cruises at risk of being canceled due to the Galveston closure include Carnival Freedom scheduled to dock in Cozumel Thursday at 7:30 am, Carnival Breeze and Carnival Dream both scheduled to arrive in Cozumel Friday, September 1. The arrival of Carnival Valor on September 2 is expected.
