Cozumel, Q.R. — The Department of Ecology and Environment in conjunction with the Port Authority of Quintana Roo are gearing up for another harbor cleaning.
Earlier this Fall, officials and volunteers took to the popular harbor cleaning its beaches as well as the seabed. The massive effort recovered more than 400 kilos of garbage in a relatively small but well-used area.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, head of the Ecology department, said that after the first cleaning carried out in September, a second organized clean is set for Thursday December 3. The effort in September saw the removal of buoys, plastic bags, aluminum soda and beer cans, footwear, utensils, rubber tires, glass bottles and plastic containers from under the water.
Some of the volunteers for the December cleanup will be students from the Center for Marine Technology Studies as well as ecology staff. Aside from the cleanup, Chacón Díaz is also working on arranging workshops to increase awareness on water pollution.
Marina Banco Playa, the area set for cleaning, is located at the north end of the island and is accessed via a road that leads to the hotel zone. It is a highly utilized area by both tourists and locals.
