Cozumel to create new residential subdivision to help meet the need for housing

Cozumel, Q.R. — It will be this month when the Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (Sedetus) delivers 556 lots for the creation of a new residential subdivision.

Sedetus says the new residential area will be called Gaviotas and will be developed near the irregular settlement Las Fincas.

Carlos Ríos Castellanos, head of Sedetus, said that the new lots will help meet the demand for housing on the island where there is currently a waiting list of 3,000 people who have requested a place to live.

He said that while they will continue to look for feasible spaces for additional housing construction, it is unlikely to happen during the current administration. The remaining 2,500 or so people on the housing wait list will likely be considered backlog.
