Cozumel passenger flow from mainland increases

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel has seen a sharp increase in the number of ferry passengers during the first two months of the year.

While most island visitors arrive via cruise ships, the federal ferry route from the mainland at Playa del Carmen over to the island of Cozumel has seen a 30 percent increase already this year. Luis Alejandre, Manager of the maritime terminal said that in January of last year, 160,000 passengers crossed over, however January of 2017 saw more than 210,000 passengers make their way to the island from Playa del Carmen.

In February of 2017, the passenger load increased by 28 percent over last year. They are expecting the Easter vacation to also increase the amount of ferry passengers heading to the island.

Luis Alejandre said that now they are running 63 daily routes, a figure that may increase with the holiday season which now, carries approximately 16,000 passengers per day between the three companies.
