Cozumel, Q.R. — The mayor of Cozumel says that a fourth pier for the island is a fact and that they are only waiting for the corresponding permits.
“Cozumel is on the cruise ship map and needs to continue growing. That is what the partners of the companies asked for,” Pedro Joaquín Delbouis said adding that his administration will support the fourth pier.
They are only waiting for the Ministry of Communications and Transportation to grant the corresponding permits. He explained that the next holder of the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT), Jiménez Espriu, is a person with vast experience in port management.
Joaquín Delbouis added that Cozumel continues to show leadership and must work to maintain a position including the strengthening of hotel infrastructure and sporting events, while consolidating the growth to receive cruise ships.
He explained that between the San Miguel dock and the SSA dock, there is no restriction on environmental matters so it would be the ideal area to develop the project.
“With this, we would surpass five million cruise passengers,” he said, comparing that figure to Puerto Rico who, he says, has only about 1.5 million cruise ship passengers per year.
The announcement of a fourth cruise ship dock for Cozumel was made in mid-Octber.
