Cozumel man arrested for drug possession

Cozumel, Q.R. — Elements of the state police have arrested a man on Cozumel for being found in possession of drugs.

According to their report, members of the Base of Operations of the state police in Cozumel were doing routine surveillance when they became suspicious of a man they saw carrying a backpack and a suitcase.

They say when the man noticed police, he stopped and placed a wrapped package into the suitcase. He was acting nervous and attempted to evade them.

Police stopped the man, who they say suddenly became aggressive. Upon inspection, they found him carrying approximately 4 kilos of marijuana.

A man identified at J.F.D.M was arrested and taken into custody to face a judge.

The Cozumel operation has been put into place to prevent crime on the island through patrols and preventive inspection points.

Earlier this month, a young man was arrested at the Punta Venado ferry crossing in Playa del Carmen after he was found attempting to smuggle 100 kilos of marijuana to Cozumel.

In June, a woman was arrested at the main central Playa del Carmen ferry terminal after a K-9 drug dog alerted police to the presence of drugs. The woman was found carrying two suitcases that contained 43 kilos of marijuana bound for Cozumel.
