Cozumel ferry passengers refusing to wear mouth masks are now subject to fines

Cozumel, Q.R. — Passengers who fail to respect the mandatory wearing of mouth masks at the Navega pier will be fined. Gerardo Arzate Jiménez of the Cozumel City Council, says that passengers who do not respect the use of the mask at the Navega ferry dock in Playa del Carmen risk being fined and even arrested.

He says that Cozumel municipal government personnel have been in the ferry terminals, making an exhortation to passengers waiting in line to travel to the island, to respect the health measures. The basics, he says, include the use of a mouth mask and healthy distancing.

Arzate Jiménez stressed that during the pandemic, they have tried to ensure that travelers respect the measures although some are reluctant to do so. For those who refuse to follow instructions and / or become aggressive, police will be called.

“Now you can fine by the authority of Public Security and the National Guard can proceed with the citizen who does not comply with these indications in the use of the mask on the dock,” he said.

In the event of a fine, he said that it’s around 2,000 peso and travelers are also exposed to being detained, but added that in most cases, passengers immediately comply with the use of the mask.
