Puerto Morelos, Q.R. – As part of the change to independence for Puerto Morelos, a debate has been opened about how the new municipality would promote itself.
As the town gains momentum on becoming a municipality in the state, there’s new debate about whether or not the mayor will have his own agency for tourism promotion.
Andrea Lotito, vice president of the Association of Hotels of the Riviera Maya, said the decision on whether to incorporate the Tourism Promotion Trust, the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) of Cancun, or even if there’s a need to create a special entity for the Puerto Morelos brand will be decided in the state government and Congress. She said that is when the business sector will contribute its considerations.
“At the next meeting of the Trust will be the issue on the table. Adding Puerto Morelos to the attractions of the Riviera Maya could include the route of the cenotes, a marine park, a luxury marina and an urban environment that wants to develop in a sustainable manner,” she added.
Jesus Martin Medina, Solidarity Tourism councilor, said that it has been considered to promote Puerto Morelos as the gateway to the Riviera Maya and even that is not associated with the brand Cancun.
“I think it’s time to talk to the actors and define how that brand is publicized for tourism. There should be a discussion with the directors of trusts, municipal and state governments, but they should be aware of the position of the community of Puerto which is seeking independence,” said Martin Medina.
