Nautical ports in Playa del Carmen were closed again yesterday after being reopened for only a day following a 5-day closure. The local port captain suspended all small boat activity from Playacar to Punta Esmeralda due to high waves and strong wind gusts.
Although the constant closures affect local tourism, the more optimistic say the down-days allow boat owners a chance to make repairs. Approximately 50 percent of scheduled water tours have been pushed into next week as boat captains hope for improved weather. However, Civil Protection lifeguards say there are still about 3,000 people per day enjoying Playa’s beaches.
The continual high winds and cool air are expected to stick around for several more days, says local meteorologist Luis Antonio Morales Ocaña, explaining there is a cold front parked in the north of the country.
The National Meteorological Service says the persistent entry of tropical maritime air with variable moisture will be responsible for the coastal region’s warm days and cool night time temperatures. Much of the state will continue to experience clouds and scattered rain showers for the next several days, however, daytime temperatures of 29C are expected by Thursday.
