Several parts of Canada began the new year with extreme cold weather warnings after numerous cold temperature records were broken. Towns in Alberta, for example, broke cold temperature records that dated back to 1928 including Brooks who set a new record low of -39.4 C, surpassing that city’s old record of -38.9 C.
While many regions of the US continue to see record breaking cold temperatures and north Florida receives snow, many parts of Mexico are also feeling the affects of the cold front.
As reported by the National Meteorological Service (SMN) “very cold weather will prevail for the following hours in most of the country,” of Mexico due to a mass of air that is driving cold front number 20.
Temperatures will remain at -5 degrees Celsius in Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) says that very cold conditions are expected in most of Mexico, with rains in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, and showers in areas of Puebla and Tabasco with the possibility of sleet in northern Chihuahua.
Cool temperatures are expected to remain for several more days. “Morning frosts, fog banks and a lot of cold are estimated in the mountainous regions of the north, northeast and center and east of Mexico,” they report.
Temperatures of 5 degrees below zero will be reached in mountainous areas of Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. In the mountainous regions of Sonora, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Puebla, Tlaxcala and the state of Mexico, temperatures between 0 degrees and 5 degrees below zero are expected.
Quintana Roo coast warmer than rest of country
According the SMN, a cloudy sky is forecast with intervals of showers for Campeche and scattered rains in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Warm weather throughout the day and northeasterly wind from 20 to 35 kilometers per hour.
Weather for Cancun
Possible showers for Cancun in the afternoon. The winds will oscillate between 10 and 15 kilometers per hour, with a 30 percent probability of rain. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 24 degrees Celsius during the day, while at night it is expected to drop to 17 degrees.
Weather for Riviera Maya
Weather for the region of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated showers during the overnight hours. A drop in temperature at night and during the early morning with northwest wind from 15 to 25 kph.
Temperatures for the region range from daytime highs of 24C to 27C and nighttime lows of 17C to 19C.
