Cold snap hits Riviera Maya

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A cold front that began the week had Playa del Carmen under wraps as cool temperatures and strong winds swept across the region.

Unusually low temperatures combined with high wind gusts had many locals searching for their winter jackets while others managed with just an extra layer. On Monday morning, the state capital of Chetumal woke to 15C, the beginning of a series of low temperatures that stuck around until late this week.

The low temperature of 15C was also recorded by the department of Meteorology and Climatology for Playa del Carmen. Local meteorologist Jaime Villasano Espejo reported the rural area between Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos recorded 12C.  The department noted these conditions had not been felt since this time last year.

Scattered clouds mixed with showers and heavy winds with gusts up to 45 kilometers per hour were cause for the Playa del Carmen port to close navigation to all boats except the federal route between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Other water activities were also suspended in some areas as a precautionary measure.

January is typically the coldest month along the coastal region with Cancun and Playa del Carmen reaching average daytime temperatures of 23C (73F).
