Civil Protection working on assessment of sinkhole in Playa del Carmen street

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A sinkhole that appeared in the center of a Playa del Carmen street is being accessed. The hole was noticed by area residents on Wednesday after it appeared in the middle of a central street.

Authorities were sent to the hole on Avenida 1 Sur, between 30 and 35 Street, where they proceeded to close the street. The hole formed after the subsoil caved in due to a cavern.

José Torres, operational director of Civil Protection, confirmed that it is a sinkhole and that likely appeared when it did due to the recent rains. However, the cavern below formed some time ago, he said.

“A cavern was formed, maybe a drinking water line or drainage pipe generated it, but that will be determined later,” he said adding that they have already contacted other government agencies to determine the steps to follow, which will include an assessment.

He said that those assessing the situation will be the ones to determined the repairs required and how long that section of road will be closed.
