Cancun, Q.R. — Civil Protection for the state of Quintana Roo has upgraded their storm alert for most of the region from blue (minimal) to yellow (moderate) as of last night.
The National Meteorological Office says Tropical Storm Nate was located Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. approximately 280 km southeast of Cozumel Island and 272 km east of Xcalak. Present movement is north-northwest at 33 km/h. Nate is expected to hit the region this evening around 7:00 p.m. with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and gusts of 100 km/h.
Nate’s cloud bands will generate intense storms in regions of Yucatán and Quintana Roo and very strong storms in areas of Campeche. Waves along the coast of Quintana Roo and north of Yucatan will reach between two and four meters.
The National Meteorological Office is closely monitoring this system in coordination with the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.
They are maintaining a surveillance zone from Punta Herrero, Quintana Roo to Río Lizards, Yucatan.
It is recommended that the general population and maritime navigation be aware of the updates and warnings issued by the National System of Civil Protection.
