City reaches landfill agreement

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – An agreement to keep Playa del Carmen’s landfill open 24 hours a day has been reached.

Laguna Promotora Ambiental SA de CV (PASA), the company that owns the city’s landfill site, wanted to close the landfill during the night hours.

But according to Adrian Manzanilla Lagos, deputy director of Public Services, that is the timeframe when about 40 percent of the city’s garbage is collected.

Manzanilla Lagos said that an agreement has been reached with the company where PASA will keep the landfill open 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

He said, “We have managed to come to a resolution with the company because we cannot stop the service of garbage collection. We are all the time collecting garbage and require the landfill to be open.”

Initially, PASA had a set schedule to receive garbage between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturday until 2:00 p.m. but some urban routes, and in particular tourists areas, are not available for nighttime garbage collection.

“We have trucks that pass Fifth Avenue at 2:00 a.m. or early in the morning when the bars close. They cannot close the landfill. It is useless to collect garbage at all times of the day if we cannot place it in the landfill,” explains Manzanilla Lagos.

In early May, PASA had threatened to close the landfill and Manzanilla Lagos due to non-payment of the collection service.
