Cancun, Q.R. — A fire at a popular central hotel in downtown Cancun was the result of children playing with fireworks.
Several children launching fireworks in central Cancun landed one of the lit crackers on dry greenery of the hotel Xbalamqué in Supermanzana 22. The fireworks caused flames to engulf part of the hotel, however, the hotel’s palapa was sprayed with fire retardant, which helped keep damage to a minimum.
Luis Antonio Lomeli, director of Civil Protection of Benito Juárez said a group of local children started the fire when launching fireworks, and noted that the hotel’s structure had retardant, which prevented the situation from becoming greater.
The fire was extinguished and the portion of burned hotel closed.
