This could be welcome news for Ikea lovers and smartphone enthusiasts. On Sunday, Ikea announced that starting April, some of the company’s new consumer furniture pieces will be fully equipped to charge your phone – wirelessly.
The wireless charging stations are integrated into furniture pieces such as lamps, desks and tables using Qi Wireless, a technology designed by the Wireless Power Consortium.
While the wireless technology does not work with all phones, it is compatible with Google Nexus 6 and Samsung Galaxy among a few other brands. But Apple users beware. The new line is not iFurniture and therefore, does not work with iPhones.
There will also be an add-on kit available to consumers who buy the specialized furniture pieces. The add-ons will allow you to add additional wireless charging stations to existing furniture. The wireless charging-integrating product will set you back about $33 US.
Jeanette Skjelmose, a corporate manager at IKEA, explains, “Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess. They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power. Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.”
