CFE cuts services to nearly 100 illegal hookups

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – More than 100 families have been left without electricity after CFE removed the illegal wiring to the service.

After receiving continual complaints of electrical interruptions from paying customers, CFE cut power service to nearly 100 homes that had been stealing electricity. Numerous houses that intersect with Avenida Lilis and Bahía de Plenty Street in Playa del Carmen had run their own cables into the neighborhood transformer to power their homes.

The neighborhood boxes are not equipped to handle the additional hookups which resulted in constant blowouts. The blowouts left paying CFE customers without electricity, sometimes for up to two days. In an attempt to defend their services, they reported the situation.

CFE officials arrived to find nearly 100 homes had illegally connected to the boxes which were causing constant overloads and transformer explosions. Some local residents became so outraged that the service was being cut that police and military personnel had to be called in so CFE employees could disconnect and remove the illegal wires.
