Cozumel, Q.R. — An inspection from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has confirmed that Hotel Secrets Aura on the island of Cozumel does not have the proper permits to release sea turtles. The inspection came after several allegations and citizen complaints that the hotel had not only fenced a sea turtle nesting area, but had also hand-released hatchlings for tourist purposes. Cozumel, Q.R. – Cozumel has had a record-breaking year already with registered sea turtle nests. To date, turtle camp staff at Punta Sur have registered a total of 830 nests that consists of loggerhead and green sea turtles.
