Cancun, Q.R. — A new hotel project will give life to an old infrastructure in Cancun’s Hotel Zone.
The city has approved a new hotel project to be built on the site of El Pueblito, a hotel that suffered extensive hurricane damage during 2005. The property, which has laid dormant since hurricane Wilma, will become a new 687-room hotel across from the El Rey ruins at kilometer 17.7 of the hotel zone.
The project has been in contemplation for the past 24 months, but has finally received authorization to begin construction. Kukulkan 55 will be the name of the new development which will consist of a 20-story horseshoe shaped property over 2.95 hectares.
The current standing structures of the old El Pueblito hotel, which is owned by Spanish group Palladium Hotel Group, will be demolished to make way for the new project.
This year, the city of Cancun will see the development of five new hotel developments, two of which will be at Puerto Cancun, one at El Pueblito (Kukulkan 55), the Royalton and one, AM Resorts, for the mainland of Isla Mujeres.
