Cancun’s drunk driving campaign sends another 67 to jail

Cancún, Q.R. — The retention center in Cancun was busy over the weekend with 67 people being sent to the facility as city police continue with their drunk driving campaign.

Cancun’s Drive Without Alcohol program was set up at the intersection of the avenues of November 20 with Rancho Viejo, Avenidas Kabah and Nichupté, José López Portillo with Rehoyada and Tulum with Sayil.

Over the two-day check period, city police stopped a total of 239 vehicles and had 192 drivers blow. Of those that blew, 67 failed and were sent to the the Municipal Retention Center (el torto) for having a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.

The Municipal Secretariat of Public Safety and Traffic reported that the 67 motorists who were found at the control points of the Drive Without Alcohol program have to serve time for a period ranging between 12 to 36 hours, depending on their blood alcohol level.
