Cancun taxi driver fined, suspended for overcharging passenger

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun taxi driver has been fined for overcharging and verbally insulting a passenger after he refused to pay the inflated fare.

The Taxi Quejas service, which belongs to the taxi drivers union Andrés Quintana Roo, sanctioned one of their own Saturday for the overcharging and mistreatment of a passenger.

The incident occurred in Cancun at 3:40 p.m. when Cancun citizen Edwin Martínez Alvarado was traveling from Zone 20 to Zone 19, a 35 peso fare. He was charged 50 at arrival. He refused to pay the 50 peso, instead handing the taxi driver 40 peso.

The taxi driver not only failed to return the 5 peso in change, he began verbally insulting the man.

On their Facebook page, the labor secretariat of the union reported that taxi driver Felipe de Jesús Avila Ayala was sanctioned for charging more than the authorized rate and for verbally insulting his passenger.

They say that Avila Ayala has been suspended from work for seven days and will have to participate in mandatory courses related to the General Labor Regulations, Quality in Service, awareness, as well as gender equity and prevention of violence.
