Cancun takes top spot at Tianguis Turístico de Mérida

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun was established as the most sought after destination during the recent Tianguis Turístico de Mérida 2021. According to the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), 28 percent of search inquiries generated during the fair were for Cancun.

While Cancun lead the way, Sector reported interest-related searches by popularity were followed by Riviera Maya with 18%, Mérida 16%, Mexico City 15%, Los Cabos 15%, Acapulco 14%, Oaxaca 13%, Puerto Vallarta 13%, Pueblos Mágicos 11% and Guadalajara 10%.

The General Director of Cancun Tourism, Jorge Luis Téllez Vignet, said that more than half of the attendees at the Tianguis Turístico de Mérida were interested in Mexican Caribbean tourist attractions and services.

Cancun mayor, Mara Lezama, said that Cancun is a clear example of the country’s economic reactivation due to the many advantages it offers to visitors.

“This is a clear sign that Cancun has positioned itself as a national example of economic reactivation in the southeast and Mexico thanks to its wide connectivity with other destinations, first-rate infrastructure and services, health security and paradisiacal natural landscapes,” she said.

As explained by the official, the city contributes more than 143 billion peso per year to the Gross Domestic Product of Quintana Roo, and is projected to exceed $2.9 billion dollars of economic income this year.

“All these figures translate into jobs, income and well-being for the families that depend directly or indirectly on this important productive engine,” she added.

This year, the Tianguis Turístico de Mérida set a new record with 1,635 buyers and 598 million peso of sales after 57,287 business appointments.
