Cancun, Riviera Maya welcomes new direct flights from Canada

Sunwing Airlines has announced they will begin offering direct flights from Windsor, Ontario to Cancun starting December.

Mexico’s prime resort area, Riviera Maya, will soon be a quick flight for Windsor residents wanting to head south for their annual winter thaw. The direct flights are to begin December 21 of this year.

With Cancun quickly growing as a popular destination choice for Canadians, Windsor is just one of the many Canadian cities to join the direct flight list. Mexico’s Riviera Maya offers visitors 121 kms of sandy beaches, warm turquoise water, world-class health spas and unbeatable hospitality.

Cancun and Riviera Maya are also important ecotourism destinations with a lot to see and do for travelers of all ages. The Riviera Maya offers numerous outdoor activities such as horseback riding, turtle nesting, snorkeling, jungle treks, cenote swimming and sea fishing.

Andrew Dawson, Chief Operating Officer, Sunwing Travel Group says, “We are delighted to offer this new Sunwing service directly out of Windsor as an extension to our regular program of winter flights that has been in operation here since 2010.

”This will be the first season that we are able to operate flights to three different destinations from Windsor and we feel that Riviera Maya is a great addition to the flying schedule. We look forward to welcoming vacationers from Southwestern Ontario to our recently opened Sunwing exclusive resorts in the area.”

Passengers on Sunwing’s new direct flight to Cancun and the Riviera Maya can enjoy a glass of sparkling wine, complimentary Hot & Fresh Bistro Meals, in-flight entertainment, free checked baggage and a generous 20 kg baggage allowance.

Mayor of the City of Windsor and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Windsor International Airport, Drew Dilkens, said, “The launch of the Cancun service is an important step in the growth of our airport.

“Windsor Airport currently serves 252,000 passengers per year, and 2014 marked the third straight year in which our airport set a new passenger record. We are committed to continually expanding our range of air service to new destinations.

“With a Cancun service added to the mix, Windsor and Essex residents will no longer have to make the long trek to Toronto, or negotiate an extra border-crossing into the U.S. We will be able to fly directly to Cancun from YQG with all the ease, comfort and convenience we have come to appreciate when using Windsor International Airport,” said Dilkens.
