Cancun, Q.R. — When it comes to romance and Valentine’s Day, one in four couples around the globe choose Mexico as their destination with Cancun and Riviera Maya first choices for weddings and romantic vacations.
According to data from the Ministry of Tourism the country captures 23 percent of the world market in the romance tourism industry.
When it comes to weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, renewal of vows and even bachelor parties, Mexico dominates in the industry, particularly for its beaches and colonial cities that awaken romanticism and passion among its foreign visitors.
In the nation, 600,000 weddings are performed each year, of which 70 percent take place on the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean. According to official figures, foreign lovers who choose Mexico as a destination prefer Cancun and Riviera Maya.
Other destination preferences that are chosen by internationale visitors include Cozumel, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende. However, national lovers opt for Morelos, Acapulco, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Riviera Maya-Cancun, Los Cabos, Riviera Nayarit, Merida and Puebla.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, “Although there are no precise indicators about the increase in the influx of visitors for the concept for romance tourism, some destinations have metrics, including San Miguel de Allende, which reported a growth of 25 percent both in number of visitors and in economics registering 750 weddings in 2017.”
The cost of a wedding in Mexico ranges from $4,000 to $21,000 USD, while in the United States, the average cost spent on a wedding is $30,000.
Since 2012, Mexico has 23 destinations with service providers who specialize in romantic wedding with 600 speciality providers, the agency said.
