Polo is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing sports along the Riviera Maya as several thousand people are expected to take in the ninth annual Del Rey Cup.
After a brief Maya ceremony to bring luck from the gods, the ninth edition of the annual event will take place on Sunday at Del Rey Polo Club outside Cancun.
Sunday, the finalist events will begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue until 6:00 p.m.
The event was addressed by Laura Fernandez Piña, Secretary of Tourism, and accompanied by Manolo Calvo, Polo event organizer.
Saturday was the day four games were held. Saturday’s Polo players included Argentina, Spain, the United States and Mexico. After the games, a live concert with Laureano Brizuela and Son Latino Miami’s “Angel of Rock” will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Involved in the games are Paradissus, Hotel Me, Inn Riviera, Interjet, Blue Five and Lemmus.
A portion of the proceeds from the alcohol and Calcutta betting system will be donated to the Fire Department of the municipality of Benito Juárez.
Last year, the polo games were held at the King Country Polo Club and attracted about 2,000 people.
