January and February saw Cancun receive more than 600,000 American tourists, making it the number one destination with the US market.
The Association of Hotels in Cancun and Puerto Morelos says, “During the first two months of the year the area had about 600 thousand tourists from the United States. That’s an increase of 2 to 5 percent each over January and February 2014 in which the number of visitors was 50 percent more than the 4.9 million who stayed between Cancun and Puerto Morelos.
The first month saw 397,983 Americans while February the figure was 201,997, mostly repeat travelers from Texas and California.
“A study on travel trends for summer revealed that Cancun is the favorite after three domestic destinations and the first international list,” the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB).
In their pre-winter 2014-2015 surveys of the US market, online travel agencies like Expedia and Travelocity placed Cancun as the main destination for beaches vacations, and now TripAdvisor reaffirms that position after their own study of travel trends.
For domestic destinations, Cancun ranks fourth behind Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, and Orlando. For international travel, first choice is Cancun Punta Cana in Dominican Republic, Playa del Carmen, Mexico and in Europe, first choice destinations include Paris, London, England and Rome.
Aside from beautiful beaches and world-class all-inclusive hotel options, an early winter and an increase in affordable direct-flights from major US cities to the Cancun International Airport are likely reasons for the sharp increase in American travelers.
