Cancun PRD candidate resigns from political race after arrest

Cancun, Q. R. — Juan Vergara, a pre-candidate for Benito Juárez, resigns from the electoral contest for what he says are personal and family reasons, however the resignation comes less than a week after his arrest.

In a letter addressed to the national president of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), the pre-candidate for federal district 3 of the municipality of Benito Juárez, Juan Vergara Fernández, reported that for personal reasons, he is withdrawing from the political race.

“I withdraw from this political contest purely for personal and family reasons,” he said adding “I thank this political party for the opportunity that I was given to be able to contend with a popular election office in the upcoming elections of July 1, 2018, specifically by the Federal District 3 of the municipality of Benito Juárez.”

President of the PRD State Executive Committee in Quintana Roo, Jorge Aguilar Osorio, likewise thanked Juan Vergara for his participation in the internal process for the selection of candidates in the upcoming elections.

Juan Vergara Fernández was the former secretary of Finance and Planning and was arrested at the beginning of February accused of operations with resources of illegal origin, a process to which he has been criminally linked.
