Cancun police mistake bags for body parts, find illegal snails

Cancun, Q.R. — A man carrying a load of white snails has been arrested in Cancun after police mistake his inventory for body parts.

Federal police surrounded a pickup truck in Cancun Thursday night after noticing numerous black garbage bags in the bed. Under the impression the bags may have contained human remains, police searched the contents to find the driver was transporting 300 kilos of white snails.

Police reported traveling along Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard in Cancun when they noticed a Ford pickup parked outside a convenience store. They say that their attention was drawn by the black garbage bags in the bed of the truck.

Upon inspection, the driver, Luis N, was found transporting 300 kilos of white snail, a protected species in Mexico. Luis N claimed to not know that fishing white snail was illegal.

He was arrested and handed over to the attorney general for processing.

In June, the Mexican navy at Mahahual were led on a water chase by fishermen caught poaching pink snail. There were no arrests.
